Japan Pledged its Contribution of USD 1.23 Million to Five IAEA TC Projects in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Asia Pacific Regions

On September 14, the Government of Japan pledged its contribution of USD 1.23 million to support five IAEA’s Technical Cooperation (TC) projects in Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Asian Pacific regions, through Japan’s contribution to IAEA Peaceful Uses Initiative (PUI). The decision was announced by the Japanese Head of Delegation Dr. Yoshiaki Oka in his statement at the 59th IAEA General Conference.
“Benefits of nuclear application should be delivered to a larger number of people, in broader areas, and more safely”, Dr. Oka said in his statement.
The projects that Japan will support are listed by regions as follows;
(Africa)
“Strengthening Medical Physicists’ Capacities to Ensure Safety in Medical Imaging, with an Emphasis on Paediatric Imaging Safety (AFRA)*” – USD 247,000
(Latin America and Caribbean)
“Strengthening National Infrastructure for End-Users to Comply with Regulations and Radiological Protection Requirements” –USD 347,000
“Establishing the Caribbean Observing Network for Ocean Acidification and its Impact on Harmful Algal Blooms, Using Nuclear and Isotopic Techniques” –USD 94,000
(Asian Pacific)
“Promoting the Sharing of Expertise and Infrastructure for Dengue Vector Surveillance towards Integration of the Sterile Insect Technique with Conventional Control Methods among South and South East Asian Countries” –USD 294,000
“Developing Bioenergy Crops to Optimize Marginal Land Productivity Through Mutation Breeding and Related Techniques (RCA)*” –USD 253,000
Japan will continue supporting TC projects in close cooperation with the IAEA and countries in these regions.

The Practical Export Control Workshop was hosted by the Wassenaar Arrangement as part of its 20th Anniversary programs and held at the Permanent Mission of Japan to the International Organizations in Vienna on 27 and 28 June 2016. More than 100 government representatives from 46 countries participated in the technically focused Practical Workshop.
Workshop speakers included the 2016 WA Plenary Chair Ambassador Anu Laamanen (Finland), 2016 WA General Working Group Chair Ambassador Paul Beijer (Sweden), 2015-2016 WA Experts Group Chair Robertas Rosinas (Lithuania), 2016 WA Licensing and Enforcement Officers Meeting Chair Jon Erik Strömö (Norway), as well as the Head of the WA Secretariat, Ambassador Philip Griffiths. The WA control lists as well as export licensing and enforcement topics were covered during the two days.
